Rescue & emergency response

Ready to Respond When Communities Need Help

Emergencies in Turkana often occur far from services. SOPSAR seeks to establish and strengthen emergency response capacity and coordination across the county, including remote areas.

Emergencies we prepare for

Response areas

Floods

Flash flooding along seasonal rivers displaces households and destroys property and livestock.

Fire

Fires in settlements can spread rapidly through closely built homesteads.

Drought

Prolonged drought threatens livestock, water access and household food security.

Disease outbreaks

Community awareness and coordinated response to human and livestock disease outbreaks.

Food insecurity

Support and coordination for households facing acute food shortages.

Other community emergencies

Coordination and referral for emergencies affecting remote pastoralist settlements.

Our objective

Building a base for coordinated response

SOPSAR's organizational objectives include establishing a base centre and participating in emergency and disaster response across Turkana County and remote areas, working alongside county government, national agencies and humanitarian organizations.

SOPSAR does not currently present itself as a fully equipped emergency response centre or an emergency medical service. The organization seeks to establish and strengthen emergency response capacity and coordination in Turkana County.
